Principle Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching System

In the Department each lecturer carries out the class mostly with his/her own textbooks and with the course notes. Beside this, standard international engineering textbooks and books are used as the main references

The avoidance of overlap and co-ordination in the teaching between different lectures within the department is organized by the Head of the Department.

The Teaching Environment

Data show, overhead and slide equipments are available for the lectures. Usage of blackboards and board are in common for lecturing.

Applications may be given in computer laboratory

Capacity of the classes varies between 30 and 50 students but number of the attendance to each class is usually less that 20.
A measure taken to improve the quality of teaching is the evaluation system of lecturers made by the students at the end of each semester by answering a questionnaire form.

The Examination System

The examination and assessment principles of the Department are determined within the framework of “The Education and Training Instructions of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University”. In this respect, each subject has a mid-term examination without teaching period (between the 7th and 10th weeks of the semester) and a final examination without teaching period which takes place at the end of each semester, and lasts approximately for a month (mid-January for fall semester, beginning of June for spring semester). The only prerequisite for the final examination of a given subject is the attendance of theoretical and practical courses at the percentages of 70 and 80, respectively.

The teaching staff of a subject has the right to choose the appropriate form(s) of examination. In general, the examinations are written. Essay questions, short answer questions, and multiple-choice questions are mainly used in written examinations. The oral examinations are compulsory for dissertation thesis only. The examinations are carried out by the teaching staff who have taught the course.

There is no excuse and/or additional final examinations in any term. Students who do not pass a course examination can repeat the examination as many times as necessary. However, they are obliged to graduate from the Faculty in maximum eight years and students who do not pass all the courses of an academic year, can take the courses belong to the following year but not the following second year. Students cannot retake the examination in the same year unless who have failed in only one course of an academic year (two semesters).

Evaluating of Teaching

Specific quality evaluation mechanisms to assess the quality of teaching in the department include:

- Questionnaires prepared by the University and answered by the students at the end of each semester.
- Suggestions and criticisms made by the representatives of students.
- Interviews with the managers of private management about the knowledge and skills of their employee who graduated from the Faculty in order to revise the curriculum.

Questionnaires prepared by the University and answered by the students is an establishment procedure and cover all the teaching staff
